Italian Food enjoys an excellent reputation in kitchens worldwide. New York based Rao’s Specialty Foods, Inc. has shaped the face of Italian Cuisine in the USA and is now poised to conquer the international markets.
The history of Rao’s dates back as far as 1896, when Charles Rao established a small saloon in New York City. More than a century later, the business continues to remain in the hands of the Rao family. Rao’s Specialty Foods was formed in 1993.
Rao’s Specialty Foods has developed a range of products for the retail trade. The portfolio is made up of 12 different sauce varieties. Rao’s Specialty Foods’ sauces are made from natural ingredients such as Italian plum tomatoes and fresh vegetables. The range of sauces includes: New Artichoke Sauce made with fresh Italian artichokes, Roasted Garlic Sauce made with aromatic, caramelized garlic, 4 Cheese Sauce, a smooth blend of four classic Italian cheeses, Pizza Sauce made with Italian cherry tomatoes, and Rao’s famous Marinara Sauce, a traditional slow-simmered tomato sauce. Other flavors include Tomato Basil Sauce made with fresh basil, and Vodka Sauce, made with Parmesan and Romano cheeses and vodka. For people who are sensitive to the flavor or the effects of onions or garlic, Sharon developed Sensitive Formula Marinara Sauce which achieves full-bodied taste without the use of onions or garlic.
The sauce selection includes two Southern Italian favorites: spicy Arrabbiata Sauce with just the right amount of crushed red pepper, and Puttanesca Sauce, a combination of tomatoes, anchovies, capers and olives along with two hearty vegetable sauces - Garden Vegetable Sauce made with fresh peppers, onions and mushrooms, and Roasted Eggplant Sauce made with freshly roasted eggplant. more...

Anna and Vincent Rao
In
1974, business had become so brisk that Vincent’s wife, Anna
Pellegrino Rao, brought her pots and recipes to the restaurant. Anna was an unlikely restaurant chef. She was as elegant as her husband was
homespun. Anna’s
deft touch improved all the traditional Italian
dishes and Rao’s became a favorite for a small
army of steady customers. Anna wondered how the family could bring this simple Southern Italian style cooking to the customers they couldn't fit into the tiny Rao’s Restaurant. It was Anna's wish that eveyone would someday be able to enjoy a good homemade marinara sauce, and in 1993 Rao’s Specialty Foods was formed.
Vincent Rao
Vincent Rao was a very different kind of man. Instead of tailored clothes and Waldorf haircuts, Vincent preferred a cowboy hat and casual clothes. He also preferred cooking in the kitchen at the saloon. He was born in 1907 in the house next door to the Rao’s Bar & Grill, and lived there all his life.
